Hulu Orders Comedy Pilot Based on Carrie Brownstein Memoir

Although Hulu broke our hearts with the cancellation of Difficult People, they’re making up for it in an even bigger and gayer way. They recently ordered a pilot for Carrie Brownstein’s Search & Destroy, loosely based on her memoir, Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl.

The memoir follows her adolescence as a young musician growing up in the Pacific Northwest. Taking place during the ‘90s, it’s set against the backdrop of the feminist punk Riot Grrrl movement. The pilot is described as being about “a young woman, a band and a community learning how to be unafraid of their own noise.”

Brownstein is currently coming off her IFC hit series, Portlandia with Fred Armisen. She’s also directed episodes of Comedy Central’s Idiotsitter and Hulu’s Casual. She makes her feature directorial debut with MGM’s Fairy Godmother. Fans also know her as guitarist and vocalist for punk band, Sleater-Kinney.

Written and directed by Brownstein, she’ll executive produce alongside Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, and Ali Krug of Annapurna. The half-hour pilot comes as Hulu recently wrapped The Mindy Project and announced the fourth and final season of Casual.
