Nava Mau, star of Baby Reindeer, made history as the first out trans performer to be nominated for an Emmy for the Limited Series/TV Movie acting category.

“Unfortunately, the opportunities afforded to trans people and Latinas and all under-represented people have been extremely limited,” she told Entertainment Weekly after learning of the nomination. “That has gotten in the way of us being able to grow in our craft and explore all we can be. So, it has been an honor from the very beginning, when I first read the script, to even consider that I could be a part of a story like this.”

Mau plays Teri, a trans woman who dates the main character, Donny, until his queer shame ends up sabotaging the relationship. Richard Gadd, who plays Donny, is another nominee, alongside Jessica Gunning, who plays the obsessive Martha.

Baby Reindeer and this moment has shown us that when we’re given the opportunity, we can grow into it and so far beyond it,” said Mau. “I’m hopeful that I by no means will be the only [one] moving forward. I’m just honored to get to celebrate this year.”

Mau is going to be competing against Gunning for the supporting actress in the Limited or Anthology Series category. The awards are to be held on September 15 later this year.

Other stars Mau will compete against include Lily Gladstone from Under the Bridge, Diane Lane from Feud: Capote vs The Swans, Dakota Fanning from Ripley, True Detective: Night Country’s Kali Reis, and Aja Naomi King from Lessons in Chemistry.
