This past Pride month, a Texas brewery received a bomb threat against its popular drag brunch. Staff have now responded by crafting “the biggest gayest beer we could possibly imagine” and donating the proceeds to a volunteer organization that provides security for LGBTQ+ events.

On June 9, Austin’s The Brewtorium Brewery & Kitchen announced on social media that its Legendary Drag Brunch was being canceled over “a bomb threat citing the Drag Show as the reason.”

“The police were called and they searched the premises,” the post continued. “They found nothing suspicious however, for the safety of everyone in the building, we felt our best option was to close for the day.

“It breaks our hearts that this kind of thing still exists.”

Although heartbroken, The Brewtorium’s staff got busy brewing the perfect response. Now, just over two months later, they’ve unveiled Big Gay Beer.

“In response to the bomb threat we received at June’s Legendary Drag Brunch with [Queer-Latina retail brand] Las Ofrendas that forced us to have to cancel the event, our staff got together and decided to brew the Biggest Gayest beer we could possibly imagine to show our continued commitment to being a safe place for queer people and all good, kind and loving individuals in our city,” The Brewtorium wrote.

Big Gay Beer is a hazy double IPA with an ABV of 8.7%. In terms of taste profile, it’s “fruited to the max with Pink Guava, Orange and Mango” along with “bright notes of Tropical Fruit, Candied Orange Peel & Ruby Red Grapefruit.”

A portion of Big Gay Beer’s sales will go towards Veterans for Equality, a group of volunteer former armed service members that provide security at events in marginalized communities. The Brewtorium has been partnering with the group since the bomb threat to foster safety at drag brunches.

“We appreciate their services to provide peaceful protection & a safe environment at events like Legendary Drag Brunch & beyond,” The Brewtorium wrote.
