When Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race, the world seemed to stop. It felt as though every American was glued to their phone, wondering what the announcement meant for Kamala Harris — every American, that is, except for her husband, Doug Emhoff.

What was keeping Emhoff from tuning into the biggest moment in his wife’s political career? A SoulCycle class in West Hollywood with his gay friends.

Emhoff told the story over a video call last week, when he made a surprise appearance at a digital organizing event for “Black Gay and Queer Men for Harris.”

Biden’s announcement came out during the one-hour SoulCycle class, Emhoff recalled, and he wasn’t aware of it until after. “We’re out there having coffee, messing around and talking, and … people are coming up to me,” Emhoff said, as reported by the LA Times. “So it’s now, like, after the announcement has gone out, and my friend’s partner said, ‘Um, you need to look at this,’ and I said, ‘What?’”

Lo and behold, his friend’s partner was holding up Biden’s announcement, with all the implications for Harris it held.

“Of course I didn’t have my phone, so I ran and ran and got into our car, and of course my phone is just on fire, and it’s basically, ‘Call Kamala,’ ‘Call Kamala,’ ‘Call Kamala,’ from everyone,” Emhoff said. “And of course, the first thing she said was, ‘Where the … were you? I need you.’”

So Emhoff was cycling with WeHo gays and tuned out from his responsibilities? Sounds exactly like the kind of queer chaos we need from a future First Gentleman. As one viral post put it, Emhoff’s behavior is “actually brat,” meaning he’s matching his wife’s Charli xcx-endorsed energy.

Meanwhile, Emhoff also took time on the call to shout out Harris’ support for the Black and queer communities.

“As it relates to this wonderful, beautiful community of Black gay men, she has always been beside you, with you, has had your back, and always will have your back, just like she’s going to have everyone else’s back,” Emhoff said.
