Chappell Roan is one of the world’s fastest rising pop stars, but where does she stand on the current queen of the genre? Thanks to a recently resurfaced interview, Roan’s stance on Taylor Swift is making the rounds on the internet.

In an episode of the podcast It’s Real with Jordan and Demi from October, Roan chatted with the titular hosts about her music taste. She name-dropped some of her favorite artists, including Hemlocke Springs, Grimes, and Feist, then revealed which artist had served as her soundtrack on the drive to the studio.

“On the way over here I was listening to ‘Karma’ by Taylor Swift,” Roan said. “Like, I just love pop.”

Naturally, host Jordan Edwards asked the question on everyone’s lips: “Do you consider yourself a Swiftie?” he asked.

“I don’t consider myself a Swiftie,” Roan replied. “I don’t feel like I can have that honor, because I don’t know her catalog and all the lore behind everything. I can maybe name a few songs off of each album.”

“I can name the hits, but by no means do I have the honor of saying I’m a Swiftie,” she concluded.

Swifties across the internet were elated to hear that Roan, if not a capital-S Swiftie, was still a fan of Swift’s, and that she consider the moniker an “honor.” Several suggested that she start calling herself a Swiftie anyway: “Chappell!!! If you like Taylor Swift you’re a Swiftie!” wrote one commenter on TikTok.

“We’ll give you the honor Chappell,” agreed another.

Others gave Roan recommendations for where to start diving deeper into Swift’s discography. “Shuffle that glitter gel pen song playlist,” advised one Swiftie, referring to what fans call Swift’s most bubblegum pop songs.

And over on X, Swifties kept the lovefest going, appreciating Roan’s honest assessment of her own level of fandom and assuring her that good karma was on its way.

Others were amazed at how well Roan navigated a question that could easily enrage one of the world’s largest fandoms. “This is an absolute masterclass in media training,” reads one viral post.

The next step, of course, is for a formal crossover between Swift and Roan. Could a collab be on the horizon?
