JoJo Siwa’s style journey has been … a wild ride. From her early days as a Rainbow Brite bow-wearing children’s entertainer, to her controversial quasi-punk look for her viral single “Karma,” to her recent magazine cover shoot featuring a phallic surprise, Siwa’s had no shortage of signature (and infamous) looks.

It’s that last outfit that’s stirring up a fresh round of discourse, thanks to new comments Siwa made on the podcast Talk Tuah with Haliey Welch (because of course Siwa was on Talk Tuah with Haliey Welch).

Speaking about her look for LADYGUNN, which featured a bedazzled golden torso and a codpiece to match, Siwa revealed her intentions for the outfit.

“The stone bulge is — we were just giving a little spice, a little genderbend, a little ‘you can be anything you want to be,’” she explained. “It’s like back in the day when Harry Styles wore a dress.”

Siwa was referring to Styles’ internet-breaking Vogue cover from December 2020, which saw the “As It Was” singer wearing a full-length dress that looked straight out of the 1870s. Styles’ look was controversial at the time, and some of his fans weren’t happy to hear Siwa drop his name.

But others thought Siwa’s genderbent style choice was much more provocative and effective than Styles’. Regardless of how people feel about Siwa in general, they could begrudgingly acknowledge a serve when they see it.

Then there’s Siwa’s choice of phrasing. Saying that 2020 was “back in the day” is equal parts hilarious and humbling. Folks across the internet couldn’t help but feel Siwa was calling them all elderly (and calling Styles old in the process) — and considering Siwa was only 17 in 2020, who could blame her?
