After scoring a historic Emmy nomination, Baby Reindeer star Nava Mau has booked her next high profile gig. Mau will appear as a detective in the final season of the Netflix thriller You, Deadline reports.

You follows Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), a serial killer who stalks and murders his romantic interests all while maintaining an innocuous double-identity as a humble bookstore manager. After numerous entanglements and close calls with the authorities, Season 5 will have Joe returning to New York City, the setting of the first season.

There, he will encounter Mau’s character, Detective Marquez. Other than the name and the fact it is a guest star role, details on how Detective Marquez will figure into the plot are currently under wraps. Will Joe finally meet his match in the form of a gunslinging queer detective? We’ll have to wait and see.

Netflix originally announced a late 2024 release window for Season 5 of You, but this is expected to be pushed back due to the SAG-AFTRA and Writers’ Guild strikes of 2023. Season 5 began filming in March.

Mau rose to prominence in the queer HBO Max series Generation, but her profile skyrocketed after the massive success of the Netflix series Baby Reindeer, in which she played a leading role. Based on a true story, the series follows Donny Dunn (Richard Gadd), a comedian who is stalked by an obsessive fan named Martha (Jessica Gunning).

Mau played Teri, a therapist who dates Donny after meeting him on a trans dating site. Their relationship is complicated by Donny’s vehemently transphobic stalker and Donny’s own queer shame.

Mau’s work in Baby Reindeer earned her a history-making Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actress earlier this month. She is the first trans woman to be nominated in the Limited Series/TV Movie acting category.

“Unfortunately, the opportunities afforded to trans people and Latinas and all under-represented people have been extremely limited,” Mau told Entertainment Weekly.

“That has gotten in the way of us being able to grow in our craft and explore all we can be. So, it has been an honor from the very beginning, when I first read the script, to even consider that I could be a part of a story like this.

“I’m hopeful that I by no means will be the only [one] moving forward. I’m just honored to get to celebrate this year.”
