Kit Connor’s best known for bringing top-tier bisexual representation to our screens as teen heartthrob Nick Nelson on Netflix’s Heartstopper, but these days, he’s busy playing the most famous loverboy of all time: Romeo in Romeo and Juliet on Broadway.

Romeo and Juliet is traditionally a straight love story: boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl kill themselves over a misunderstanding. But in a new interview with Teen Vogue, Connor and Rachel Zegler (who plays Juliet) confirmed that their version of the couple isn’t as straight as it may seem.

When Teen Vogue asked Connor and Zegler how the full cast of Romeo and Juliet developed their chemistry, Connor was quick to sing the praises of his other co-star Taheen Modak, who plays Benvolio.

“We have incredible chemistry on stage, much better than mine and Rachel’s,” Connor joked. “It’s fantastic. I think most of the audience is begging me to kiss him.”

To that, the interviewer replied, “Bisexual Romeo I think is kind of needed.”

That’s where Zegler stepped in to confirm the speculation: “I mean, canon,” she said.

That was all fans needed to run with the idea of a Shakespearean bi-con. “real english majors know that bisexual romeo has ALWAYS been canon,” wrote one fan on social media.

It’s not the first time fans have gotten their hopes up for a bi Romeo in this production. A clip of Connor as Romeo in the play’s pre-show embracing a male cast member made the rounds last month, letting the internet know that this isn’t your father’s Romeo and Juliet — and it’s all the better for it.
