It’s an age-old debate: In all of queer cinema, which films stand above the rest? Now, the debate has taken over X (formerly Twitter), thanks to a controversial post that only scratched the surface of gay movie history.

The post comes courtesy of X user @ungodlymakk, who shared their two favorite gay movies with the caption, “They’re having a best gay movie off.” The movies in question? Red, White & Royal Blue and Call Me By Your Name.

Of course, taste in movies is subjective. As far as rom-coms, Red, White & Royal Blue is top-tier, and Call Me By Your Name launched Timothée Chalamet’s career for a reason. But other folks across the internet were eager to add their own favorites to the conversation, and especially to move outside of films centered around white gay men.

Frequent suggestions included Moonlight, which won three Academy Awards including Best Picture for its heartfelt coming-of-age story about three stages in the life of Chiron, a queer Black man growing up in Miami.

As far as sapphic cinema, Kenyan film Rafiki and South Korean movie The Handmaiden both got shout-outs — and for any Challengers fans out there, seeing Josh O’Connor get his big break in the very gay British film God’s Own Country is a must.

Another international pick is The Way He Looks, a Brazilian coming-of-age romance about a blind teenager falling for another boy.

And of course, there’s always Brokeback Mountain, the groundbreaking 2005 film by Ang Lee.

If you’re more in the mood for a comedy, 2023’s Bottoms is chock-full of both lesbianism and laugh-out-loud moments.

One viral response added more movies including The Watermelon Woman, But I’m A Cheerleader, Bound, Maurice, and Nowhere. If you’re in the market for a watchlist, it’s a great place to begin.
