Red, White & Royal Blue’s recent Emmy nomination is already ramping up the demand for updates on the officially announced sequel. Celebrating the news, an Amazon exec teased the production status on the highly anticipated follow-up.

Speaking to Variety, Jennifer Salke—head of Amazon MGM Studios—responded to a question on the plans and details on the script for the sequel. Given that sequel is likely still far out, Salke reaffirmed their commitment to the film but was predictably coy on details.

“We’re really excited,” Salke said. “We are into the second movie and can’t wait. The creative is awesome, and we’re so proud of the first film and getting the nomination.

“This morning, I was texting with [producers] Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter and Matt López, who are all just so proud. And we obviously love the movie, so we’re committed to the follow-up and can’t wait to get it out there in the world.”

Amazon officially announced the Red, White & Royal Blue sequel in May of this year, sharing a promo image of the decimated cake from the first film.

Before Red, White & Royal Blue had scored the Emmy nomination for Outstanding Television Movie, the film’s cast and crew attended a ‘For Your Consideration’ screening where they discussed the sequel. In the subsequent panel event, director and screenwriter Matthew López broke the news to the audience a day before the broader social media announcement. “Yes, there’s gonna be a sequel,” he said, followed by a deafening cheers from the crowd.

Casey McQuinn, author of the book on which the film is based, chimed in with the status of the screenplay. “There’s going to be a sequel to the film,” McQuiston confirmed. “Matthew and I are writing it together. And that’s all we can say!”

Besides the fact that stars Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez are reprising their roles as Prince Henry and Alex Claremont-Diaz respectively, all other details are still forthcoming. But the good news is that the dedicated fandom surrounding the film along with an Emmy nod is keeping the franchise top of mind for execs.
