It’s an American tradition: every summer, former President Barack Obama reveals what songs are on his playlist, giving us a peek into how one of the country’s foremost political families gets down. This year is no different — but the songs he included (and the songs he left out) are raising gay eyebrows across the internet.

Sharing the playlist on social media, Obama wrote, “With summer winding down, I wanted to share some songs that I’ve been listening to lately – and it wouldn’t be my playlist if it didn’t include an eclectic mix. I hope you find something new to listen to!”

“Eclectic” is an apt descriptor: Obama’s playlist includes a wild mix of genres, from the soft synths of Billie Eilish’s “CHIHIRO” to the rock’n’roll guitar of The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Among them all, one song stood out: “365” by Charli xcx.

Clearly, Obama wants the world to know that he’s having a brat summer like the rest of us. But of all the songs on Charli’s critically acclaimed album, closing track “365” is an odd choice. Has Obama paid attention to the lyrics, which talk about doing “a little key” and having “a little line”? It’s not exactly a subtle message.

Charli’s not the only gay icon on Obama’s playlist. Beyoncé also makes an appearance with the song “Texas Hold ‘Em,” the lead single from her latest album Cowboy Carter. Some of the BeyHive wasn’t impressed with Obama’s selection, though, thinking many of the other songs on the album would be better fits for his playlist. Maybe Obama’s only a casual fan and hasn’t given the full album a listen — though admitting that fact could cause a national emergency.

Meanwhile, others were gagged that Obama left out one of the summer’s biggest rising stars: Chappell Roan. Could it have something to do with Roan saying earlier this summer that she’d turned down an invitation to perform at the White House for Pride Month?

Whatever his rationale, Obama’s playlist picks are as entertaining (and baffling) as ever.
