Billie Eilish is the cover star for the November issue of Vogue. Talking to the magazine, the 22-year-old music star expresses regret about opening up about her sexuality and dating life in interviews.

“I wish no one knew anything about my sexuality or anything about my dating life. Ever, ever, ever. And I hope that they never will again,” Eilish said. “I’m never talking about my sexuality ever again. And I’m never talking about who I’m dating ever again.”

“I guess I also underestimate that things I say will be blown up into the biggest news of the whole world,” she continued. She added that she found it “so unnatural” that someone her age would make headlines for discussing her private life.

Past comments about sexuality

Since shooting to fame in 2019, Eilish has resisted labeling her sexuality. She has dated men but also stated an interest in women.

Last year, in a Variety cover story, Eilish did indeed make headlines when she revealed she was physically attracted to some women.

“I love them so much,” she said about other women. “I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real.”

“I have deep connections with women in my life, the friends in my life, the family in my life,” she continued. “I’m physically attracted to them. But I’m also intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence.”

She was later asked about the quote when she attended a Variety red carpet event.

Reporter Tiana DeNicola asked Eilish, “Did you mean to come out in the story?”

“I didn’t,” Eilish replied. “No, I didn’t. But I kinda thought ‘Wasn’t it obvious?’ I didn’t realize people didn’t know, so…

“But I saw all the articles. I was like, ‘Oh, I guess I came out today! OK, cool.’ But it’s exciting to me. I guess people didn’t know so it’s cool that they know, but, oooh, I’m nervous talking about it. But I’m for the girls.”

A couple of days later, Eilish posted to Instagram. She said, “Thanks Variety for my award and for also outing me on a red carpet at 11 am instead of talking about anything else that matters i like boys and girls leave me alone about it please literally who cares stream ‘what was i made for’🥸”

Hit Me Hard and Soft

Since then, Eilish has continued to delight queer fans with some of her most sapphic lyrics.

Her hit song “Lunch” features the line, “I could eat that girl for lunch / Yeah, she dances on my tongue.

In April, she told Rolling Stone, “That song was actually part of what helped me become who I am, to be real. I wrote some of it before even doing anything with a girl, and then wrote the rest after. I’ve been in love with girls for my whole life, but I just didn’t understand — until, last year, I realized I wanted my face in a vagina.”

Then there was her guest appearance on Charli XCX’s “Guess” remix this summer. In it, Eilish sings “Charli likes boys, but she knows I’d hit it.

It seems pretty clear, from her lyrics, past interviews, and social media postings, that Eilish is attracted to both men and women. For now, though, expect her dating life to remain off-limits to interviewers. Eilish wants her music to do the talking.
