Ariana Grande‘s latest music video has the internet in a frenzy.
Grande is continuing her Eternal Sunshine era with her third single “The Boy Is Mine” and fans are in love, as is the singer. The track was already well-talked about it for its title, which pays homage to R&B stars Brandy and Monica’s Grammy-winning duet, now the internet is picking a part all of the music video’s references. So we did that for you.
Netflix’s You
Entertainment with an edge
Whether you’re into indie comics, groundbreaking music, or queer cinema, we’re here to keep you in the loop twice a week.
First off, there’s a clear reference to Netflix’s psychological thriller series You. In the music video, Grande stars an obsessed love interest to Max Starling, played by Penn Badgley. Badgley, who plays the lead character and stalker Joe in You, is mayor of a fictional city that’s eerily similar to New York City and is stalked by a Catwoman-esque Grande.
Catwoman homage
Speaking of Catwoman, Grande’s choice of feline attire and whip that she creates in the video is direct reference to the DC Comics antiheroine. The infamous cat burglar has been played by numerous Hollywood heavyweights, such as Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, Eartha Kitt, Anne Hathaway, and most recently Zoë Kravitz. Grande channels them all and it was even noticed by Berry herself.
Brandy and Monica cameo
The music video also features superstars Brandy and Monica as on-air reporters commenting on Mayor Starling’s rat plan and his political campaign. In 1998, the icons released “The Boy is Mine,” reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and staying there for 13 weeks. Not to mention, the duo won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
Rats and NYC
Rats, with one of them being voiced by Grande’s bestie Liz Gillies, seem to be a problem in Grande’s fictional New York-esque city in the music video. Rat overpopulation is a challenge for New Yorkers and Grande, whose character is also cat lover, can’t stand them either. During Brandy and Monica’s news update, she even says “F*ck those rats” and New Yorkers watching her video might agree.
Wicked billboard
In a blink and you’ll miss it moment, Grande also highlighted her upcoming film Wicked in the music video. The movie, which will star Grande alongside Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo, has a billboard that can be scene when Grande jumps from one building to the next. The devil (or Glinda) is in the details.
