Icon and certified maneater Nelly Furtado is finally back, proving that not all good things come to an end. After a near seven-year hiatus, Furtado has announced the name, tracklist and release date of her upcoming album. The Portuguese-Canadian star has also teased potential, confirmed, and extremely gay collabs, including a Drag Race star and another famous Folklore singer.

On Thursday, Furtado announced her seventh studio album — appropriately titled 7 — in a black-and-white Instagram photo. In the caption, she described her struggle to get back into music, which involved going through hundreds of songs to arrive at the final fourteen.

“I made 400-500 pieces of music in 4 years,” Furtado explained. “My ADHD doesn’t always allow for me to organize creations in a methodical way so it’s hard to explain how we have chosen 14 songs that magically rose to the top of the heap.”

“So this album can’t be listened to like audio wallpaper,” she added, “or maybe it can depending on how you like to enjoy music but I don’t even care if you skip songs, it’s up to you how to enjoy it. I really mean that. My only intention was to provide some portals to trip out and release and escape.”

The album will drop on September 20, the same day as Katy Perry’s already polarizing album. Is it shade or coincidence or a double-dipping treat for pop fans? Time will tell.

One famous pop star Furtado is definitely gunning for — in the best possible way — is Taylor Swift. She told Extra TV that after hearing Swift (who, like Furtado, has an album titled Folklore) is a fan, she wrote a song specifically for her.

While it sounds like that feature hasn’t yet gone through, Furtado has previously confirmed she will work with a Drag Race alum. After guesting as a judge and vocal coach on Canada’s Drag Race, Furtado told Gay Times that contestant Tynomi Banks will feature on the album.

“There’s a Tynomi feature,” she said back in March. “She’s on my album. You’re going to have to wait to hear it. She’s very talented. You’ve only just seen the beginning of Tynomi Banks. She’s just getting started.”

According to the newly released tracklist, Tynomi Banks will feature on the song “Save Your Breath” alongside Charmie Taborah Johnson and Williane 108.

Furtado rose to fame with her 2000 debut album Whoa, Nelly! and the smash hit “I’m Like A Bird.” But it was 2006’s Loose that cemented her icon status, featuring chart-topping hits “Promiscuous,” “Maneater,” “Say It Right” and “All Good Things (Come to an End).”

Over the past year, Furtado has gradually been returning to music, culminating in a Coachella performance this spring. In 2023, she released her first single in five years “Eat Your Man” (in homage to “Maneater”) and reunited with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake for the single “Keep Going Up.”
