Legacy

There’s one more SOPHIE album coming. Here’s how.

Producer and trans trailblazer SOPHIE may be gone, but her legacy is far from over. Today, June 24, her family announced that a posthumous self-titled album SOPHIE will release on September 27 via record labels Future Classic and Transgressive, and its first single is out now.

The project was near completion when SOPHIE tragically passed away in January of 2021. Instead of letting it collect dust, SOPHIE’s family, including her brother and studio manager Benny Long, chose to reach out to her closest collaborators to complete the album.

“When we, Sophie’s family, took our first steps towards bringing this project to fruition we contacted the dear friends with whom she envisioned the album,” reads a statement on the Instagram account @msmsmsm_forever. “We wrote, ‘We have been finding comfort in the music Sophie left us, it is a gift that we truly cherish as we try to find a way forward, with Sophie forever at the center of our worlds.’”

“Sophie didn’t often speak publicly of her private life, preferring to put everything she wanted to articulate in her music,” it continues. “It feels only right to share with the world the music she hoped to release, in the belief that we can all connect with her in this, the form she loved most.”

“Sophie gave all of herself to her music. It’s here that she can always be found.”

The album’s lead single, “Reason Why,” features Kim Petras and BC Kingdom. On Instagram, Petras posted about the new song and her relationship to SOPHIE.

“Soph you’re still changing music!!!” she wrote. “I’m so happy to have this piece of you with me, I love you forever.”

Fans can pre-save and order the album here, and “Reason Why” is now streaming on all platforms.
