As fans eagerly await the third season of the Heartstopper TV adaptation, its source material is close to getting an update, too. At a recent Q&A, series creator Alice Oseman revealed what could be in store for the next volume of the Heartstopper graphic novels, and fans are already reeling from the implications.

While taking audience questions at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Oseman was asked about Heartstopper characters going to therapy. In her answer, she zeroed in on one of fans’ favorite characters — Nick Nelson, portrayed in the Netflix series by Kit Connor — and what he’ll face in the series’ sixth and final volume.

“In Volume 6, Nick is going to go through a lot of stuff,” Oseman said. “I really want to unpack the character of Nick and how everyone perceives Nick as being, like, the dream boyfriend, and the pressure that he feels in performing that role.”

“I am considering maybe Nick goes to therapy, but I’m not quite sure how or when, or maybe that’s something to save for the TV show where we’ve got more room,” she continued. “Technically, all of them should go to therapy.”

Just as Oseman plans to unpack Nick’s character, her fans are unpacking the layers to her statement. Having seen the series’ other main character Charlie go through his own journey with mental health, some are excited to see Nick get the same in-depth exploration, pointing to panels from previous volumes that show what he might be working through in therapy.

Others latched onto the end of Oseman’s statement, which referenced saving the plotline for a future season of the TV adaptation. So far, no seasons are confirmed beyond the upcoming third, but they’re taking Oseman’s comment as a sign that a Season 4 announcement is just around the corner.

Volume 6 of Heartstopper doesn’t have a release date set, but Season 3 of the TV adaptation hits Netflix on October 3. Check out a clip from the upcoming season below.
