Although Heartstopper Season 3 has been out for barely a week, it’s no surprise that many viewers have finished the extremely bingeable series and are looking forward to news on Season 4. Unfortunately, it sounds like we’ll be in for a much longer wait than usual.

Speaking to Tudum by Netflix, creator Alice Oseman discussed the future of both the TV series and the graphic novel it is based on. Season 3 adapted Volumes 4 and 5 of the comic. Because Volume 6 is not yet out, with Oseman commenting that they are “very much at the beginning” of the writing process, it will likely be some time before we see the TV adaptation. Not only that, the sixth volume is the final installment, and Oseman is already talking like the end is nigh for the Heartstopper series as well.

“In terms of the show, obviously there is more story in the books that we have yet to cover, and we would love to tell the end of the story in TV form,” said Oseman.

It’s also important to note that (at the time of writing) Netflix has not officially renewed Heartstopper for a fourth season. It’s likely the streamer is reviewing the viewership metrics and general reception for Season 3 before making the announcement. For the record, Netflix announced that Hearstopper had been renewed for a second and third season just shy of a month following the Season 1 premiere.

Fortunately, Oseman seems confident that Season 4 is a sure thing, even if it will take some time. “As much as I — and everyone else — want the final installment to come to the screen as soon as possible, there are a lot of moving parts to account for that make it hard to solidify anything,” they said. “But we’re doing our best, and will let fans know as soon as we can.”

Although Oseman couldn’t share any specific details on Season 4, they had a lot to say about writing the conclusion to the graphic novel. “I’m coming towards the end of the story now, which is a very bittersweet feeling,” they said. “I love Heartstopper so much, so I am very sad that it’s going to end, but I’m ready to tell the end of that story … I feel like it’s in the best circumstances. I can’t wait to show everyone what happens.”

While it might be the end of the story, the characters are not just going to disappear. “Our little gang of Heartstopper characters are going to all grow up and have to go out into the big wide world,” Oseman added. “It’s really fun to imagine where all of these characters are going to end up. I’m excited to take them on that journey in Volume 6.”
