The Senate race in Texas appears to be getting closer. For the first time, a poll has placed Democratic challenger Colin Allred one point ahead of Republican incumbent Ted Cruz.

Texas has long been seen as a solid red state. However, support for the Democrats has risen in recent years and many believe Allred is in with a chance of stealing victory from Cruz. The latter has served as the state’s US Senator since 2013.

Over the past few months, Allred has crept up in the polls but has generally lagged 1-5 points behind Cruz. A new poll by Morning Consult has Allred at 45% and Cruz at 44%.

The poll comes after the Cruz campaign issued two new videos earlier this week attacking Allred over his support of trans rights. In particular, Allred’s opposition to anti-trans bathroom bills.

The ads were unveiled on Tuesday. According to the Texas Tribune, the Republican party will spend “millions” promoting the adverts in the weeks running up to the November election.

In one, Cruz accuses Allred of not knowing “the difference between boys and girls.”

Allred wins support of former Republican Reps.

Despite Cruz’s efforts to concentrate on what he regards as “woke” issues, Allred continues to pose a serious threat to him. Allred even has the backing of a couple of former Republican Representatives. Both Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger (who both sat on the January 6th committee) have endorsed him in recent days.

Yesterday, Kinzinger shared a poll from August that showed Allred just a couple of points behind Cruz.

“Dear Texas, Here is a rare opportunity to elect a good man @ColinAllredTX,” Kinzinger said. “I knew him from the house, and he was always respectful to all, smart, and willing to work across the aisle. @tedcruz is just plain fake.”

Kinzinger’s tweet received over 33k likes.

Here’s Liz Cheney explaining why she’s supporting Allred over Cruz. Allred has served in Congress as the US Rep. for Texas’ 32nd congressional district since 2019. Cheney says she’s been able to work with Allred on issues in the House, whereas she believes Cruz shows greater unwillingness to cross the aisle to work with Democrats to get things done.

Allred has consistently blasted Cruz on social media. He was quick to highlight the Morning Consult poll placing him ahead.
