Former Republican Rep. George Santos appears to be having a tough time of it. It’s perhaps not that surprising given his ongoing legal woes. He has an upcoming trial on numerous charges relating to wire fraud, deception, and using donor’s money for personal gain.

The gay, former lawmaker was expelled from Congress last December after a scandal-hit first year in DC.

Yesterday, Santos posted to X about experiencing bad mental health. He implored people to show a bit more compassion and to always bear in mind that you don’t know what’s happening in someone else’s life.

“No one likes to talk about Mental Health,” Santos said. “1 in 3 Americans struggle with mental health to some degree and I’m not embarrassed so say [sic] I’m one of them.

“We lack compassion and need to raise awareness so people feel heard and understood. Be more tolerant towards one another, you never know what’s going on deep within a persons life.”

It’s hard to disagree with the words or sentiment.

It’s therefore a little surprising that Santos’ tweet came just hours before an earlier one he posted in which he laughed at Democratic Rep. Cori Bush losing her primary on Tuesday.

Santos should know better than anyone what it’s like to lose office… you’d think he’d maybe have more, um, compassion. Instead, he took obvious delight in what he called a “humiliating” defeat for Bush.

Cori Bush loses primary

Cori Bush has represented Missourri’s first district since 2021. She is a progressive Democrat and a member of the left-wing “Squad” in the House, alongside the likes of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. She has been an outspoken critic of Israeli action in Gaza over recent months.

On Tuesday, Bush lost her primary to opponent Wesley Bell, a St Louis prosecutor. Bell’s campaign was heavily supported by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

Missouri is heavily Democratic and the winner of Tuesday’s primary is expected to win in November.

In her concession speech, Bush remained defiant. She said departing Congress “takes some strings off.”

“Because now, there are some strings that I have attached. And as much as I love my job, all they did was radicalize me, and now they should be afraid,” she said.

“They’re about to see this other Cori, this other side,” she continued. “There is nothing that happens in my life that happens in vain. So, this happened because it was meant to happen. And let me say, it’s because of the work that I need to do.”

“And let me say this: AIPAC, I’m coming to tear your kingdom down!”

Santos has been a vocal supporter of Israel’s reaction to last October’s attacks by Hamas and its efforts to bring Jewish hostages home.

George Santos mulls auctioning possessions

Santos appears to have largely relied on making Cameo videos for an income since departing Congress. Yesterday, he said he was thinking of auctioning off his member’s pin as he’s “so done with politics”. He suggested he might donate the money to charity.
