Things became unusually heated in a committee hearing in Congress last night. The late-evening House Oversight Committee was discussing a proposal to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress.
GOP lawmakers expressed anger that Garland advised President Joe Biden not to release tapes of him being interviewed by investigators. This is despite the fact they have transcripts of the interviews. They want the tapes, too.
However, things took a decidedly personal turn thanks to Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
At one point, Greene asked if any Democrats on the panel were employing the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan. He’s the judge in the New York hush money trial of Donald Trump.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) expressed the thoughts of many when she replied, “Please tell me what that has to do with Merrick Garland?” She later added, “Do you know what we’re here for?”
“I don’t think you know what you’re here for,” Greene responded. “I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.”
Room erupts into chaos
Democrats in the room expressed outrage at the comment. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) called Greene’s comments “disgusting”, adding, “that is absolutely unacceptable. How dare you attack the physical appearance of another person.” AOC moved to strike them from the record.
“Are your feelings hurt?” Greene replied, snarkily.
“Oh girl, oh baby girl, don’t even play,” Ocasio-Cortez retorted.
“Oh really, baby girl?” Greene echoed.

Chairman James Comer (R-KY), struggled to keep things under control as the barbs flew. A vote was taken to halt Greene speaking. However, she was allowed to proceed by winning this 22-20.
Greene agreed to have her words struck but refused to apologize.
“Bleach blonde bad built butch body”
Crockett sought clarification from Comer on whether comments about personal appearance were allowed in the chamber. She offered up a hypothetical.
“I’m just curious, just to better understand your ruling,” Crockett said to Comer. “If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blonde bad built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?”
Everyone understood this to be a veiled comment toward MTG.
Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) then asked Crockett to “calm down,” to which Crockett replied: “No! Don’t tell me to calm down because y’all talk noise and then you can’t take it!
“Because if I come and talk s*** about her, y’all gonna have a problem!”
So MTG wanted to talk about my appearance in COMMITTEE?!

It’s against the rules to do…
She refused to apologize!
The chairman ruled that it was ok…
AND I asked for clarification about what qualifies as “engaging in personalities”
& basically wanted to know if I could…
The heated exchanges prompted much comment on social media. Florida Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz posted an edited clip that nodded towards Megan Thee Stallion’s “Body” hit. He tagged Crockett, captioning it, “Oversight after Dark @JasmineForUS Diss track”.
Crockett, clearly amused, reshared it, saying “J&J (Jared & Jazz) dropping diss tracks like we Kendrick Lamar… MTG Truly wanted the smoke tonight.”

The Oversight Committee had pushed its hearing until the evening primarily because some of the GOP lawmakers involved, such as Lauren Boebert, dashed off to New York earlier in the day in a show of support for former President Donald Trump at his aformentioned hush money trial.
