An interview JD Vance gave over the weekend has slowly blown up online.

Vance was raised in an evangelical household but converted to Catholicism in 2019. He married his wife, Usha, in an interfaith ceremony, in 2014. Usha Vance is a practicing Hindu.

Vance discussed his faith and marriage with the New York Times on Saturday. He says his wife accompanies him to church most Sundays, except when they’re on the road.

Vance said, “I feel terrible for my wife because we go to church almost every Sunday.”

She “didn’t sign up to marry a weekly churchgoer” he added. He said that Usha “has three kids” and accompanies him to make sure the kids behave themselves and keep quiet.

“Obviously I help with the kids, but because I’m kind of the one going to church, she feels more responsibility to keep the kids quiet in the church,” Vance chuckled.

He added that Usha was “more than OK with it, and that was a big part of the confirmation that this was the right thing for me.”

Many people expressed shock at Vance’s comments.

“Phrasing it ‘She’s got three kids’ about his own children is wild,” was a comment with over 59k likes on TikTok. Many others also took umbrage with Vance saying “She has three kids” rather than “We have three kids.”

“He exposes what a bigger a**hole he is every time he opens his mouth,” said another.

The video was shared by the New York Post and re-shared by comedian and author Joy Reid.

“He was trying so hard to be relatable but this whole dialogue was a big red flag 🚩”, commented one person beneath Reid’s TikTok duet.

It’s also now blown up on X.

Vance praises Donald Trump’s Bloomberg interview

Vance has faced consistent criticism since Donald Trump chose him as his running mate. In particular, his attitude toward women and issues such as reproductive rights. Many have blasted him for old comments he made about “miserable … childless cat ladies”.

Vance was famously a critic of Trump back in 2016 but has now become one of his most loyal supporters.

Trump gave what many observers regarded as a rambling, incoherent, and vague interview with Bloomberg’s chief editor John Micklethwait yesterday.

Trump repeatedly strayed off-topic and gave answers wholly unrelated to the questions he was asked.

After the debacle, Vance took to X to try and put a positive spin on Trump’s performance.

“This entire interview is incredible. President Trump walking into the lion’s den and reminding the people who’ve screwed up the country that they’re not as smart as they think.”
