The Democratic opponent of Rep. Lauren Boebert in Colorado’s District 4 has released a Beetlejuice-themed campaign video.

Posted to social media yesterday, the video challenges Boebert to return to the Buell Theater in Denver for a debate. That’s the theatre that ejected Boebert and a male companion last year for disruptive behavior during a performance of Beetlejuice: The Musical.

Democratic candidate Trisha Calvarese posted the video. It starts with an image that looks like a movie theater preview screen. There’s a puff of smoke on the lower edge. A narrator asks “Is Lauren Boebert vaping?”

Another voiceover then says, “On November 5th, your worst nightmare tries to claw her way back to Congress. Don’t say her name.”

That’s a reference to the original Beetlejuice movie, in which Michael Keaton’s character was summoned by calling out his name three times.

Calvarese, sitting in a theater with a bag of popcorn, addresses the camera and says, “Congresswoman Boebert I know you’re new to the district and you clearly don’t know how to act in a theater, or in Congress, I think I can help.

“Let’s get together for a debate on TV. I’ll tell you what keeps your new neighbors up at night. It shouldn’t be whatever this is.”

The video then shows Boebert as she’s escorted from the theate. She shows staff her middle finger (it’s censored in this clip).

Boebert switches districts

Calvarese is a former speechwriter for the AFL-CIO and the National Science Foundation. She won her Democratic primary in June.

Boebert is currently the Representative for Colorado’s third district. Entering Congress in 2021, she quickly made a name for herself as one of the Republican party’s more extremist, MAGA representatives. She is pro-gun and anti-woke, often speaking out against LGBTQ+ rights and mocking people who state their pronouns.

Boebert only narrowly won re-election in 2022. Facing a tough challenge to again win her seat this November, she announced last winter that she intended to switch to the 4th District, to fight for outgoing incumbent Ken Buck’s seat. Pollsters consider it a far safer Republican district and Boebert is expected to win.

Despite this, Boebert is unlikely to welcome Calvarese’s mocking campaign advert. Or the imminent release of the long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel, which will only remind Colorado residents of Boebert’s Beetlejuice-related scandal.

The theater concerned said it asked Boebert and her companion to leave after she was caught vaping, talking loudly, and filming the performance on her phone. After she disregarded a warning from staff, she was kicked out. Subsequently released CCTV footage of the auditorium also showed Boebert and her date fondling each other during the performance.

Boebert later apologized and said her behavior “fell short of my values”.
