Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla) gave a speech at the Republican National Convention last night. It went viral on social media, but probably not for the reasons Gaetz hoped.

All everyone wanted to talk about was Gaetz’s appearance. Specifically, what possible cosmetic work the 42-year-old has possibly had done to lend him such a smooth, wrinkle-free visage. Others questioned the skills of the makeup artist who prepared him before going on stage.

Here are just a few of the comments online.

Gaetz has long aligned himself with the far-right of the Republican Party, happily voting against any advances in queer rights and voicing support for legislation such as Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay’ law.

Philadelphia Re. Malcolm Kenyatta, who is gay, highlighted Gaetz’s politics in his reaction.

What did Matt Gaetz say?

Gaetz’s startling appearance distracted from what he had to say. He used his brief speech to praise Donald Trump, promise to be Trump’s “number one ally” in Congress if he’s re-elected, and predictably bash Joe Biden.

“President Trump will never defund our police, but he will defund foreign aid to countries that hate us,” Gaetz said. “And President Trump understands that it isn’t racist to check ID for a hunting license or welfare benefits or a fishing license, then it is okay to demand an ID to vote everywhere in this country in every election.”

The House Ethics Committee opened an investigation into Gaetz in April 2021. It continues to investigate allegations of sexual misconduct and illegal drug use. Gaetz strenuously denies the allegations.
