JK Rowling is having a very weird week.

First, the internet took notice of what looked to be black mold creeping up the infamous TERF’s walls in her profile picture on X, formerly Twitter. Then, when she switched her picture to another equally bizarre selfie, the internet obsessed over a strange phallic object seemingly emerging from her ear. Now, the whole affair has earned Rowling an apology — just not one directed at her.

The apology comes courtesy of trans activist Eli Erlick, who first posted about the irony of Rowling’s home apparently going to ruin thanks to its mold infestation.

A few days later, Erlick decided to apologize for the post.

“I would like to apologize for an insensitive tweet I made earlier,” Erlick began. “This tweet implied that JK Rowling’s politics were the result of a mold infection in her brain. This was wrong and insensitive of me. I promise I will do better. I came of age in a different time and this is a wake-up call.”

But it’s not Rowling herself Erlick thought she offended: it was the innocent mold just trying to make a home for itself on Rowling’s walls.

“I now realize that mold is a natural, microscopic fungus that is essential for life on this planet. I want to apologize to black mold everywhere for implicating it in JK Rowling’s bigotry,” Erlick wrote. “Mold has never caused anyone to engage in anti-transgender harassment. It is a victim in this scandal, too. I hope black mold everywhere will accept my sincere apology as I continue to work to better myself in our current political environment.”

The internet thanked Erlick for her heartfelt apology. After all, what did mold ever do to her? It’s not inherently evil. Transphobia, on the other hand…
