If there’s one thing queer people love, it’s sorting themselves into categories. Thanks to a viral TikTok, we just unlocked two more: “girl’s gays” and “guy’s gays.”

The terms come courtesy of TikTok creator Eric (@barmitzvah.dancer), who gave the internet a vocab lesson in a new video.

“To me, a girl’s gay is a gay guy whose best friends are all women, and then a guy’s gay is a gay guy and all of his best friends are all gay men,” he said.

“There are very distinct personality differences between girl’s gays and guy’s gays,” Eric continued. “For instance, if you’re a guy’s gay, half your personality is just being, like, having an attitude and being sassy for no reason. But to be fair, if you’re a girl’s gay, half your personality is just stanning women pop stars.”

Those definitions really resonated with Eric’s viewers, particular the girl’s gays who related a little too hard. “Not me standing in the corner with my girls and an Ariana Grande tattoo,” one wrote.

“The way my mouth dropped when you said ‘stanning women pop stars,’” commented another. “That’s not half my personality it’s the whole thing.”

Eric himself said he’s a girl’s gay too. “Of course, I’m sexually attracted to men and I have a good relationship with some men — like my dad, I dunno — but at the end of the day, I love women and I’m obsessed with them,” he said to close out the video.

He elaborated in the TikTok’s caption, writing, “Only men I need is my boyfriend and my dad and Frank Ocean.”

Some commenters weren’t satisfied Eric’s definitions and invented a third category: among the guy’s gays, they say, there are straight’s gays and gay’s gays.

“I’m a girl’s gay but also a hetero guy’s gay… [because] being a gay’s gay stresses me out,” one commenter admitted.

Others said there’s no need to be so binary, and that their friend groups are a healthy mix of genders. In other words, they “meet in the middle and dance all night,” as one Beyoncé-quoting commenter put it.

Whether or not you take Eric’s categories seriously, they make for a fun game of “tag yourself”: girl’s gay, guy’s gay, or some secret third thing.
