On Tuesday night, Tim Walz made his first speech as Kamala Harris’ running mate — and if one off-color joke is anything to go by, he’s coming out swinging.

During Walz’s speech in Philadelphia, the topic turned to his competition on the other side of the aisle: JD Vance, who’s already had no shortage of controversies on the campaign trail.

“I gotta tell you: I can’t wait to debate the guy,” Walz said to thunderous applause. “That is, if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up.”

The room went even more wild, this time with groans and laughter mixed in with the shouting. Walz raised his palms and took it all in. “You see what I did there?” he asked the roaring crowd.

If you didn’t see what Walz did there, you might have missed the flurry of jokes about Vance losing his virginity to a couch. Though there’s no evidence that Vance and his sofa ever actually got busy, that didn’t stop the internet from taking the rumor and running with it to hilarious effect. Still, no one expected Walz himself to get in on the action, but by cracking that joke, he’s proved he knows what’s really on voters’ minds.

Naturally, Walz’s joke was a massive hit, not only with viewers of the speech across America but with Harris herself, who could be seen in the background of Walz’s speech fighting the urge to break out into her signature boisterous laugh. Harris’ love of a good joke has earned her the title of IJBOL queen on the internet, and it only feels right that her new partner can match that energy.
