It wasn’t that long ago that pop icon Taylor Swift was screaming “gay rights” at the top of her lungs during the Trump era. But we’ve come a long way from the star-studded “You Need To Calm Down” video. In fact, Swift may have just done a total 180, according to some recent drama.

Here’s the deal: last week, Brittany Mahomes—wife of footballer Patrick Mahomes—landed in hot water for liking one of Trump’s Instagram posts detailing the specifics of his proposed GOP platform. After being called out, Mahomes responded by calling her critics “haters” in an Instagram story. “I mean honestly, to be a hater as an adult, you have to have some deep rooted issues you refuse to heal from childhood.” She posted. “There’s no reason your brain is fully developed and you hate to see others doing well.”

So what does this have to do with Taylor Swift? Well, since Swift and her boyfriend Travis Kelce and the Mahomeses are the reigning power couples of football, they’re often seen together on double dates and at sporting events. And while Swift took pains to distance herself from former pal Brittany Mahomes at last Thursday’s Kansas City Chiefs game, a new photo from yesterday shows the two hugging, seeming to have put their differences behind them.

The photo was taken on Sunday at the U.S. Open, just days after Swift’s decision to distance herself from Mahomes at the Chiefs game. Now, folks are wondering if this is a sign of Swift deciding to politically pivot.

There’s a fine line between diplomacy and complacency, and Swift is erasing that line.

Obviously people can be friends with folks who have different political beliefs than themselves, but in the case of a very public figure like Taylor Swift, every move is potential political statement, as Swift herself well knows. So what gives? Especially considering that Swift’s fashion as of late has been…let’s just say middle America-coded.

Even if Brittany Mahomes hadn’t liked the recent Trump post, we’d have questions about this friendship.

Basically it’s a great day to remember that celebrities—especially celebrities with private jets and sports boyfriends—are not your friends.

It’s disappointing, but far from shocking. Until Swift formally endorses Harris-Walz, we’ll be side-eyeing the hell out of this friendship.
