A new report from Rachel Maddow has revealed that former President Donald Trump’s legal team are once again trying to silence Stormy Daniels, the bisexual adult film star with whom he allegedly had an affair in 2006. Trump attempted a similar tactic during his 2016 campaign, for which he was recently found guilty of 34 felony counts.

Just weeks before the 2016 election, Trump’s lawyers made a hush money payment to Daniels amounting to $130,000, in order to prevent her testimony from reaching voters. During MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes show on Wednesday night, Maddow revealed that once again—with less than a month left to go in the next election cycle—Trump’s lawyers are attempting illegal payments to silence Daniels.

“I don’t know why I’m surprised that this is happening,” Maddow began. “I will admit to being a little bit bewildered by it as well as being a little bit shocked by it, even though none of us should be shocked by anything.”

The report comes from documents and video MSNBC obtained from Daniels’ attorneys. In the aftermath of the legal battle with Trump, Daniels owed legal fees for which she launched a GoFundMe earlier in the year. It was as the two legal teams debated the exact amount owed, with Trump’s team demanding around $650,000 and Daniels’ team arguing for closer to $600,000, that Trump’s lawyers allegedly made the ofer.

“We disagree that a payment of $620,000 would be in full satisfaction of the three judges,” Trump’s team wrote in a document obtained by MSNBC. “However, we can agree to settle these matters for $620,000 provided that your client makes no public or private statements related to any alleged past interactions with Trump, or defamatory or disparaging statements about him, his business, and/or any affiliates or his suitability as a candidate for President.”

Effectively, the Trump team was seeking a lower sum in exchange for an NDA, laundering the hush money payment within legal fees. Daniels’ team refused the offer, and the attorneys settled the payment without an NDA.

Given how Trump’s last attempt at a hush money payment went (Trump is now the first convicted felon running for president), Maddow contacted the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, who declined to comment. Maddow also contacted the Trump team, who claimed the documents originated from a “foreign hacking attack.” Maddow maintained that documents came directly from Daniels’ attorneys.
