Texas Rep. Shawn Thierry, formerly a Democrat who lost her primary, has announced she is switching parties to become a Republican. The reason? Transphobia.

“The Democratic Party has veered so far left, so deep into the progressive abyss, that it now champions policies that I cannot, in good conscience, support,” she said recently. “Mothers around our country from all backgrounds, races, and communities understand that it’s our sacred duty to preserve the innocence of our children, protect them from being sexualized, and sterilized. To respect universal truths, and to uphold the rights of biological women as defined by science, nature, and common sense.”

It’s unclear who she’s protecting by joining a party that targets trans kids.

Texas Democratic Party Treasurer Odus E. Evbagharu pushed back against Thierry’s move in a statement. “Maya Angelou told us ‘When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.’” He explained. “So it’s no surprise Shawn Thierry has decided to align herself with the very forces who consistently undermine the rights and futures of Black people and other marginalized communities.”

Thierry has been appointed as a director of political strategy for Genspect, a Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group that tries to take down transgender care in the United States.

Fortunately, Thierry lost her most recent election to Lauren Ashley Simmons, a queer Black woman. Simmons is now the Democratic nominee for the district. Simmons campaigned on progressive values, something Thierry doesn’t champion.
